Last Sunday, 12,500 runners took part in an epic edition of the Sofico Gent Marathon. Participants enjoyed the beautiful stretches through the city centre and Ghelamco Arena finishing in the Topsporthal.

The heavy rain and inclement weather could not dampen the enthusiasm of the many runners. Participants could choose between 5 km, 11 km, half marathon or marathon.

The half marathon and 11 km sold out ahead of the event day with nearly 7,000 and 2,200 participants respectively. There were only a few places left for the marathon distance and we managed just under 2,600 participants. The newly added 5 km distance also attracted a lot of curiosity and clocked up 800 participants.

The starting shot was sounded by Piet Maes, CTO of Sofico, Councillor of Sport Sofie Bracke and Karel Sabbe, the ultrarunner who successfully completed the Barkley Marathons a week earlier.

Missed this edition? Mark the date 24 March 2024 for the next edition of the Sofico Gent Marathon. Don’t feel like waiting that long? On 21 May, you can run across Ghent again. That’s when the programme features the ENGIE Stadsloop Gent. You can choose a race of 6 or 10 km straight through the centre of Ghent. The longest distance will also cross the famous fly-over, the viaduct of the B401 that connects the E17 with the city centre of Ghent.
